Cherished Gowns UK is a Charity that is always looking for Volunteers to Knit, Crochet and Sew.

Volunteer Seamstress:
We ask that all people enquiring about helping us by sewing have:
a) have some sewing experience and are able to follow a pattern
b) own a sewing machine.
c) are able to cover the cost of postage to send finished items to our office
d) send us a gown made from your own fabric before we send you a wedding dress to work with.

When you enquire about becoming a Volunteer Seamstress you will be required to completed a short online form and will be added to our Facebook Volunteers Group. Only volunteers are allowed in this group as many people find it upsetting to see their dress in a deconstructed condition, and we like you to feel comfortable asking any questions or guidance about the transformation process.

We ask that you send us a trial gown made from your own fabrics using our patterns for us to check before we send you a donated UK wedding dress. We understand that lots of people are not professional sewers , in fact the majority of our seamstresses are hobby sewers! If the trial gown you send in is not of the standard we need we are always happy to work with you to improve it. The parents we provide this service too only get to dress their baby once so we need to make sure the gowns we provide are perfect.

Once we have recieved the trial gown we your contact details are passed on to someone from our Dress Waiting List for them to send you their precious donated UK wedding dress. We ask that this dress is treated with the utmost respect and as if it was your own.

You will have up to 6 months to transform this dress in to gowns, however if the dress remains untouched after having it for 3 months you will be asked to return it to us. This is to ensure all dresses are completed within the 6 month time scale.

Volunteering to Knit or Crochet:

Volunteering to Knit or Crochet for Cherished Gowns is less formal than volunteering to sew for us. There is a short form to complete, and then you are very welcome to make items at your own leisure. We have some patterns that we can share and size guidelines to follow but there are no time restrictions, and you are very welcome to use your own patterns.

Please note: We are only able to use knitted or crochet hats, bootees, bonnets, and blankets. We are unable to make use of knitted cocoons, gowns or cardigans.
